RALPH FIENNES PAYS TRIBUTE TO HIS LATE MOTHER

The normally reclusive Ralph Fiennes both surprised and delighted fans in a Dublin book shop where he spoke from the heart about his mother, writer and artist Jennifer Lash, who died from breast cancer four years ago.

Along with his sister Sophie and brother Joe, he read and signed copies of her recently published novel, Blood Ties.

The 34-year-old actor spoke with pride about "Jini," a woman whose life was filled with pain but who inspired her children to push their talents to the limit. "My father called her a wounded bird. But it did not stop her from healing other wounded birds she encountered," he said.

He also laughed with the crowd as he recalled some of his mother's eccentricities. She did not want a "faceless" funeral but organized her own, opting for a bright blue coffin made by a local carpenter and carried to the cemetery in the back of a Volkswagen van.

His mother's greatest disappointment, he said, was having Blood Ties turned down by publishers as she struggled with cancer. He has used his influence to get it published and said, "We are doing all we can to give it a profile."
