RED DRAGON (R)

A prequel to the incomparable "Silence of the Lambs," this movie takes far too much for granted and ends up merely average on the scary scale. Ralph Fiennes is a brilliant choice to play Francis Dolarhyde, a reclusive video-account manager with a facial deformity, but we've no idea why he is the brutal Red Dragon who murders entire families. Edward Norton plays FBI agent Will Graham, recruited to solve the case because of his ability to see the crime from the perpetrator's viewpoint. He fails, however, and must seek out the dubious help of Dr. Hannibal Lecter, in prison for his own habit of killing and eating his victims. Anthony Hopkins still wields the lunatic charm, but the character is fast becoming a parody of its own success.
