"Richard II" by William Shakespeare, Gainsborough Studios

"Richard II" is often overlooked as one of William Shakespeare's important early plays, but with a production like this one starring Ralph Fiennes, opinions should soon change. Presented in a makeshift theatre where Alfred Hitchcock directed some films in the 1930s, this Johnathan Kent- directed version presented the fall of the last king of England in a sweepingly grand, pseudo-cinematic style. The Paul Brown designed set was nothing short of phenomenal, with grass covering the stage, and a gigantic fissure in one of the studio's brick walls providing the main entrance. Other than providing unforgettable eye candy, this setting represented the magistry of England meeting with the destructive touch of wanton power. Fiennes, mixing farce with some pathos, delivered an outstanding performance as Richard II who had no clue how to successfully run a country. Linus Roache (Bolingbroke), Oliver Ford Davies (Duke of York) and David Burke (John of Gaunt) also shone in a production the Bard would be proud of.
