Almeida Theatre Co. at the Gainsborough



The Almeida Theatre Company, based in Islington is performing Shakespeare in Shoreditch the latest London hot spot that's being called the next Notting Hill. The Company has takes over the ruined shell of the Gainsborough Film Studios to present Shakespeare's great explorations of power, Richard II and Coriolanus. Ralph Fiennes, who plays the two title roles, and Linus Roache, who plays Bolingbroke and Aufidius, lead the company of actors directed by Jonathan Kent. Designs are by Paul Brown, lighting is by Mark Henderson, music is by Jonathan Dove and sound is by John A Leonard.

Richard II, opened on 12 April. Coriolanus opens on 14 June with previews from 1 June. The plays will then be performed in repertoire, now until 5 August. On Saturdays, from 24 June, it will be possible to see both productions in a single day.

The acting company for both plays is: Sean Baker, Ian Barritt, John Bennett, Paul Benzing, David Burke (John of Gaunt/Cominius), Stephen Campbell Moore, Alan David (Welsh Captain/Sicinius), Angela Down (Duchess of Gloucester/Valeria), Philip Dunbar, David Fahm, Ralph Fiennes (Richard II/Coriolanus), Stephen Finegold, Oliver Ford Davies (Duke of York/Menenius), Emilia Fox (Queen Isabel/Virgilia), Bernard Gallagher (Bishop of Carlisle/Brutus), Barbara Jefford (Duchess of York/Volumnia), Danielle King, Paul Moriarty (Mowbray/First Citizen), Damian O'Hare, Linus Roache (Bolingbroke/Aufidius), Oliver Ryan, Marc Small, Roger Swaine, Robert Swann (Northumberland/Titus Laritus) and Ed Waters.

You can see what they're doing and learn more about the cast, the venue and the theatre company at a really cool new site called the greenroom. To really experience the site you will have to have flash, quicktime and the lastest plug-ins. They are trying to make the site "future-proof." Visit the greenroom to virtually walk around the Gainsborough Studios both as a derelict warehouse and as a fully working theatre. With contributions from the cast and production team, the theatrical process - from conception to production - will be documented via a date-linked timeline.
