THE Gainsborough Studios, where Alfred Hitchcock made many of his early films, are back in business with an ambitious theatre project.

The studios in New North Road were a landmark of what was known as Hoxton New Town in the 1930s but have stood as an empty shell for decades.

They have been taken over by Islington's Almeida theatre for two Shakespeare plays, Richard II and Coriolanus, starring Ralph Fiennes who famously played Hamlet at the Hackney Empire two years ago. He also starred in the Oscar-winning film Schindler's List and The English Patient.
