VIPs: Ralph Fiennes is starring in two timeless political plays through Oct. 1 in New York and has a few opinions on the state of U.S. politics. The Brit actor is baffled that our presidential campaigns seem always about image. He cannot imagine how another actor, Ronald Reagan, ever become president. He admits Prime Minister Tony Blair has [fallen prey] to similar image worship but says he is [basically a good man].

Fiennes suggests the presidential candidates should see Coriolanus, about a Roman warrior and [a man who doesn't compromise], one of Fiennes current Shakespearian roles at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (with Richard II).

He was toasted at a party Monday, his night off. Hosts Tina Brown of (Miramax) Talk Media and her hubby, media guru Harold Evans, welcomed Fiennes and companion Francesca Annis (in python pants) to the ivy-hung patio of their home, along with Julianne Moore (Fiennes co-star in The End of the Affair). Celebs who have seen his plays include Natasha Richardson, Willem Dafoe, Tony Randall, James Ivory and Ismail Merchant.
