Oscar & Lucinda
Released: January 22

When Ralph Fiennes arrived in Australia last year to star in Oscar & Lucinda, he felt more at home than his character, and English minister who is uncomfortable in the great outdoors.

"I loved Australia and I had a wonderful time making the film," 34-year-old Ralph says on the eve of the premiere of the Gillian Armstrong film based on the 1988 Booker Prize winning novel by Peter Carey.

Despite his increasing fame following his Oscar nominated roles in Schindler's List and The English Patient, the gently spoken actor, who has recently finished filming The Avengers, says he had few problems with fame Down Under.

"One or two kangaroos recognised me, but the humans were quite reticent," he says with a rare smile.

Oscar & Lucinda intertwines the destinies of two unusual star crossed lovers.

Gillian says she had Ralph in her sights for the role for about six years ago, while he was still an unknown theatre actor in London.

But by the time she had cast him in the film, he was committed to Schindler's List
and The English Patient, which held up production for almost two years.

"When I was told he was going to play a Nazi, my famous last words were, "Well, that won't help his career!" Gillian says.

"But what I saw when I met Ralph was a man much more like Oscar than any of the stronger and braver characters he's played. We couldn't make the movie without him."

Ralph, who also won critical acclaim in Quiz Show, was just as passionate about the film.

"I felt Oscar was me in a way," he says. "I loved his vulnerability and the sort of poetic quality about his nature."

"I'm not used to talking about my private life," he says guardedly. "I think my private passions are private, and if they're personal that means they're personal."
