While an outstanding visual achievement blending traditional animation with computer-generated imagery, this Cliffs Notes take on the Moses saga nevertheless comes off too '90s-style sensitive compared with the thundering Old Testament dramatics of the 1956 live-action version, The Ten Commandments, or its original book form. With the cruel Rameses (Fiennes) and Moses (Kilmer) as competitive stepbrothers, the film has a compelling Freudian zing, but it would've benefited from more comic relief à la that other big animation studio. The all-star cast of voices is good, however, with Stewart as the grand Pharoah, Bullock as Moses' sister and Pfeiffer as his wife--all of them warbling original, if a bit generic, songs by Stephen Schwartz (Pocahontas).
