After the 27-year-old Anton Chekhov attended the premiere of his first full-length play in 1887, he was crushed. He wrote to his brother about the experience:

<< "A mass of people on the stage. Guests. They don't know their lines, mix everything up, and talk nonsense. Every word cuts like a knife thrust in the back."
>>

More than a century later, London's intimate Almeida Theater was the setting for a new production of Chekhov's maiden effort, and Ivanov turned out to be a major theatrical event -- thanks in no small measure to a wrenching and nuanced performance by megastar Ralph Fiennes.

When Fiennes and the company took this gem to Moscow, cameras went along to record the event. Would Ivanov "play" in Moscow? That's the question at the heart of this documentary.
