The End of the Affair

ALBUM OVERVIEW

Following the daring, genre-bending mania of Ravenous and the modern day quirkiness of Practical Magic (sadly unused), Michael Nyman has retreated to familiar territory with The End of the Affair, a somber chamber work reminiscent of his austere accompaniment for Carrington and Gattaca.

Nyman marks an interesting choice for director Neil Jordan, who has used Elliott Goldenthal for his more recent efforts. From the first cue, "Diary of Hate," Nyman floods the listener's ears with strings in an effort to balance the romantic and spiritual aspects of the film, derived from Graham Greene's autobiographical novel. The score is less "literary" and studied than one might expect given the source; in fact, Nyman seems to be growing looser and more emotional as he evolves as a composer. Those familiar repetitive circumlocutions in his music which tend to drive film score fans up the wall are less in evidence here, so newcomers in particular may find this more accessible than, say, Prospero's Books. Sony Classical has done an expert job of packaging the score to appeal to both classical and film score buffs, with large selections of music gracefully sliding into each other for a seamless overall experience. The overall mood of wistful doom permeates the entire score with little variation, and this consistency of tone may not please listeners hoping for some of the variety in most of the Greenaway scores. For better or worse, this is serious stuff from start to finish.
