DINERS at the ultra-trendy, organic Duke of Cambridge pub in Islington were treated to a rare impromptu performance by Ralph Fiennes the other night.

Huddled over their polenta and rocket salad were Fiennes and Jonathan Kent, his director in the forthcoming Coriolanus, when Fiennes started to gesticulate wildly, causing onlookers to fear trouble was afoot.

Fear turned to amazement as Fiennes declaimed volubly while studying a copy of Shakespeare's masterwork, helped and abetted by Kent.

"They were quite oblivious to all the other people around; everyone was looking on totally spellbound as the two launched into what seemed almost a full-scale rehearsal," says one present.
