WARWICKSHIRE could be at the heart of a new film production industry as part of multi-million pound plans to revamp the Royal Shakespeare Company. New artistic director Michael Boyd said he would like to see film production included as part of major plans for the theatre's Stratford home.

He said: "I'm not trying to become Bollywood-on-Avon overnight, but I would like to do film production in the future."

Mr. Boyd said the overwhelming success of reality TV shows like Big Brother could point the way to bringing the excitement of live theatre into homes across the country.

The one-time director of the Coventry Belgrade Theatre said he was looking at various redevelopment plans and hoped to announce more details at Easter.

He wanted to create one major theatre space for Shakespeare and a studio for new and experimental work, as well as staging productions at the existing Swan Theatre.

He had not ruled out using the existing structure at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, but was looking at a number of options.

He said "It took 14 years before the Royal Opera House submitted their final plans - we've got ages yet."

Mr. Boyd also announced yesterday the company's 2003 festival season, which will see English Patient star Ralph Fiennes return to the Stratford stage for the first time in 13 years in Ibsen's Brand.

He said: "Ralph Fiennes is one of Britain's genuine Hollywood movie stars, who without doubt made his reputation here."

Tickets for the Swan Theatre production are expected to sell out a soon as they go on sale at the end of January.

Tony Britton's son Jasper, Henry Goodman and Emma Fielding will all be appearing on the Stratford stage next year in productions ranging from the Taming of the Shrew to Richard III.

Bill Alexander will also be directing Shakespeare's violent bloodbath Titus Andronicus.

Mr. Boyd said: "Shakespeare at that stage of his career was not above exploiting gratuitous sex and violence, but he was sufficiently good at his art to turn that to good style, as I would argue Quentin Tarantino did in Pulp Fiction."
